Petroleum refining

Petroleum refining Photo

It is the physical and chemical process that converts the crude oil obtained from upstream process to useful petroleum products such as petrol, diesel, kerosene and other fuels. The quality of the oil is improved by applying both heat and pressure. The three basic function of refining unit is 1) Separating the different fraction of hydrocarbon 2) Separated hydrocarbon is converted into more desirable product 3) Removing unwanted compound and contaminants. Up to 800,000 to 900,000 barrels of crude oil can be refined in modern refineries per day.

  • Crude oil distillation
  • Vacuum distillation
  • Atmospheric distillation
  • Thermal cracking
  • Catalytic cracking
